Vellode Birds Sanctuary
The bird sanctuary is situated on Periyakulam lake in Vadamugam Vellodu village near Chennimalai in Perundurai taluk of Erode district. It is located at a distance of 15 km from Erode. It was started in 1983 to build a bird sanctuary by planting trees around the lake in an area of 39.60 hectares. The sanctuary was expanded to an area of 77.185 hectares in 2000 under the Wildlife Act, 1972.
Birds such as yellow nosed stork, spoonbill, coot, snail stork, white sickle stork visit here from November to April. Apart from these, 109 species of birds also come and go from abroad. Pelicans from Australia and Austria, in particular, stay for up to four months and return with them to breed, lay eggs and hatch.
