1) Information about the department
Sericulture is a systemically significant agro-based livelihood sector, providing year-round employment to rural households, with substantial participation of small and marginal farmers, women, and landless labourers. The sector integrates agriculture, industry, and services through a complete farm-to-fabric value chain encompassing mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, cocoon production, reeling, weaving, and marketing. In the context of climate variability, evolving market dynamics, and increasing demand for quality-assured silk, the sericulture sector requires decisive modernisation and value-chain strengthening. Accordingly, the Sectoral Vision provides a structured and outcome-oriented roadmap to transform sericulture into a resilient, competitive, and future-ready sector.
